rain text is a new project by giovanni civitenga and giuseppe ielasi. this 4-track ep is the first in a series of records produced using each time a different and fairly limited bank of sounds. giovanni civitenga is a producer from rome, currently living and working in berlin. he has released albums under different monikers on various labels including brainfeeder and huntleys + palmers. in 2014 he started skyapnea, a label and series of broadcasts on nts radio. giuseppe ielasi grew up in the south of italy and now resides in the outskirts of milano. he mostly plays solo, but also in bellows (with nicola ratti) and in duos with enrico malatesta, kassel jaeger, andrew pekler. he has released (short) records on 12k, entr acte, senufo editions, dekorder, error broadcast and other labels and also produces music under the -inventing masks- moniker.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. following on from march s shlømo remix package featuring donato dozzy, bambounou, shlømo and label boss kennedy smith, bright sound s second release of 2016 will new a brand new ep from sweden s andreas tilliander. with his releases on his own repeatle imprint and his tm404 alias s hardware-driven techno featuring on skudge white and kontra-musik, tilliander is among sweden s most versatile talents working right now. his arrival on bright sounds is of a piece with bsrx 004, last year s reissue of fellow swede henrik johansson s 1997 ep as smyglyssna. as with johansson s record, tilliander s stettin libau ep explores slower tempo techno, locating the moments of space and energy in between its rhythmic structures. this search is most keenly observed in knapp ledsyn , with its ever-shifting sonic landscape melting away at various points to reveal its unusual, skeletal beats and hidden melodic details, while the ep title track and nybliven lots apply that approach to what might at first be a traditional dub techno template, yet still offering further small moments of off-beat character. completing the release is a detox operation remix of knapp ledsyn from nonplace records chief burnt friedman, in which the german veteran strips things down to a gentle patter of drums overlaid with suggestive flashes of the original s rich atmospheric elements.

tetsumasa’s debut ep “asa” on his own saidan label. solid sounds between savage broken rhythms somehow feels urban, flat and texturally dry. various sound components such as dub, noise, bass music and ambient are mixed within and thus creating unique sound world. it is expectable from his irregular beats that one of his music roots is abstract hip hop. “asa ep” has a remix from mogano, the owner of berlin label arboretum. tetsumasa doesn’t need a concept. this is his own sound pieces you can experience a variety of sensations.

argentine producer leonel castillo unveils yet another moniker with this new eponymous 77ks series. remaining the best-kept secret the latin american electronic music scene has brought to us so far, leonel is an icon and at the same time virtually unknown. a stylistic chameleon and an ultra talented jack-of-all-trades, he is hard to pinpoint, and even harder to categorize. surfacing at random, he’s been releasing music as leonel castillo and under various aliases – arnold slab, boeing or unknown artista are some of his monikers – on labels as diverse as ilian tape, sushitech, airdrop and his own imprint groovear.

french producers dj deep and traumer pair up for their debut on radio slave’s rekids. a key component in parisian techno since the ‘90s, dj deep’s influence is indisputable whether it’s helming deeply rooted house records, launching his own rotary dj mixer series or his numerous appearances on tresor records alongside gettraum founder roman poncet, who appears on this release as traumer. ‘la valle la b’ comes in three forms. the ‘la deep mix’ is an echoing number complete with rhythmic percussion and rumbling bass, whilst ‘la slave mix’ is a glitchier alternative featuring various subtle nuances and otherworldly atmospherics. finally ‘la spicy mix’ concludes the package with a focus on piercing synths and a compelling groove.

springing up from the osaka underground club music scene in 2006, hino is a rhythm master, intimately examining and extending pulses and grooves in his various projects. ypy is hinos long-running rhythmic solo dna lab, in which he investigates impulsion and propulsion, using drum machines and synthesizers in an organic and vital manner to create living and evolving percussive biosystems which are more than electronic music etudes.

the true techno dream team of dubfire & oliver huntemann revisit their elements project from a few years ago with a new series of killer remixes, ahead of a retrospective album coming later in the year. terra - originally released in 2011, did all sorts of damage to dance-floors across the globe. now, its all set to do it again thanks to this joseph capriati remix. the italian techno headliner has grown into a major force on the scene in recent years, and here delivers a signature slice of muscular, driving techno - taut, dramatic and devastating. paired with a remix of the now seminal feugo julien jeweils remix also hits the spot - the track received a 2016 overhaul with some of jeweils signature flair. the frenchman has been a constant figure on the top of various charts and line ups for some time, and its easy to see why - fuego is stripped back machine funk primed for big systems and even bigger moments.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

man power left his northern home and ran south of the border. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, he proves that he truly is the tourist, delivering what we’re already toting as our summer anthem—a relentless hurricane drum pattern full of toms, timbales and splashes that lays the rhythmic foundation for his pacific chords and euphoric melodies–an undeniable floor-filler that invites all to dance unencumbered by the constraints of “functional” club music. with side b’s oye, man power rolls out a similarly vibrant combination of drums and rhythm, however he toughens up the aesthetic with a massive rolling acid bassline, only briefly letting up for a spot of layered marimbas and spriteful pads before culminating in an emotional finale. after spending a couple years churning out tracks for various labels around the world, man power has undoubtably shifted his narrative point-of-view and updated his sense of craft upon his induction to the esp institute. these two songs will throw a wrench in your holiday.

deep love is the first vinyl release by stefano pozzi, dj producer and musician. it’s very difficult to define his sound: his creative process led him to merge several genres in a very original way. the artist shows us a great talent combining different electronic styles from deep house to soulful house, new jazz and chill out music. stefano is also a guitar player. with his releases, he shows us how to bring guitar sounds together with electronic music in a brilliant way. in this 12 inch ep, that could be defined as deep house, the artist has worked to merge various elements of house music: the warm sound of a moog organ with a deep drum kick, the use of hypnotic and rhythmic vocal samples, the presence of many jazz and soul contaminations due to the acoustic guitar.

hidhawk is the musical alter ego of haydeé jiménez. the mexican-based artist and cultural entrepreneur is running a busy life organizing events and cultural projects alongside the border of mexico and the us. during the night, bedtime stories like alpagain evolve from the field recordings she is collecting on her various journeys. alpagain consists of recordings from istanbul, tijuana, berlin and salzburg, featuring sounds of alpine instruments such as the alphorn, ocarina and hammered dulcimer (hackbrett). the 15 minutes track is brought to the club context on the b-side of the record with a driving remix by gerald peklar and a dub retreatment by analog solutions mastermind eduardo de la calle.

sound carrier volume 8it’s back to the cosmos with the latest instalment in chris carrier’s always-on-point series, sound carrier. the label is a home for the prolific paris artist’s techno stylings, and no.8 in the series focuses on a galactical fight theme – taking us from terra firma up into the skies and beyond. the first track, ‘alien blaster pistol’, couldn’t be more self-explanatory. mysterious keys parade over an ominous bassline while the beats keep things moving neatly. gentle chimes and bleeps are added, initiating a dialogue between the various high frequencies located in the top end. next up is ‘mahem (magneto hydrodynamic explosive munition)’, which steps into familiar sound carrier territory, that is… slightly unhinged. rolling along at a steady pace, the tune is rough, yet light with shimmering effects and charming wobbly chunks of bass. on side b chris gets gnarly on us with ‘earth invasion’. it’s the beginning of the end, so of course the music has to match that frightening prospect. gruff beats and stomping bass collide with cymbals, crunchy snares and mutant acid licks to create a beast. finally, ‘haumea brigade’ takes us into the twilight zone again, whirring fx float above hard-hitting beats and a mean b-line. eerie pads help to maintain a chilling tone throughout. deadly, the soundtrack to the end of days here on earth... prepare to evacuate!
